Updated: 4 days ago
One of the core Jewish theological beliefs is that of ‘reward and punishment: very simply put, G-d rewards us for good deeds and punishes us for bad ones. The underlying principle of ‘reward and punishment’, however, is that of cause and effect. The language of 'reward and punishment' is framed from the individual’s perspective — truly, however, our 'reward' is simply the experience of the effect our acts have in the world.
The very foundation of the universe is balance. This world and the spiritual world after it are built on symmetry. Science tries to find rhythm and pattern in the natural world — faith examines them in its moral counterpart. Spirituality is a clear well reflecting inner truth.
This is one of the most basic foundations of Jewish faith: everything we do has an effect, even if we cannot see it. Our lives are like pens, writing on cosmic paper. This is the secret of “an eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth” [Exodus 21:24] — not literal, but a key to understanding G-d’s ways.
